Turkish Airlines A321 Experienced Turbulence, Crew Injured

ISTANBUL- A Turkish Airlines (TK) flight from Istanbul (IST) to İzmir (ADB) experienced severe turbulence, leading to significant injury for a cabin crew member.

The Airbus A321 encountered turbulence shortly after the pilot issued a warning to fasten seat belts due to a sudden loss of altitude.

Turkish Airlines Turbulence

A crew member, who had been on the job for only two months, was thrown to the ceiling and then fell hard to the floor, resulting in a broken backbone. Passengers reported experiencing moments of intense fear during the incident, reported HuriyetdailyNews.

Upon arrival in İzmir, the injured crew member was immediately transported to the hospital for treatment. Medical staff confirmed the crew member had suffered a broken vertebra and was receiving necessary care.

This incident highlights the dangers posed by severe turbulence, which has been increasingly reported.

In a similar incident on May 21, a Singapore Airlines (SQ) flight from London (LHR) to Singapore (SIN) encountered turbulence over the Indian Ocean, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuries to several others.

In response, Singapore Airlines has implemented stricter safety measures. These include halting food and beverage service while the seat belt sign is on and instructing the crew to remain seated during such times.

Rise in Turbulence

These incidents emphasize the crucial need to fasten seat belts securely during flights. Loose seat belts can result in severe injuries during sudden turbulence, as passengers may be thrown from their seats and collide with overhead compartments or the cabin ceiling.

Experts note that turbulence, exacerbated by climate change, poses significant risks, although it rarely causes crashes.

Pilots generally navigate around turbulent cumulonimbus clouds, but clear air turbulence, which is harder to detect, can cause unexpected shaking.

To mitigate these risks, airlines are encouraged to enhance passenger safety instructions and crew training, emphasizing the importance of securely tightening seat belts.
