American Airlines Flight Attendants Secures New Contract Avoids Strike

FORT WORTH- The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) and American Airlines (AA) reached a tentative contract agreement on July 19, 2024. This agreement follows years of negotiations and recent assistance from the National Mediation Board.

APFA National President Julie Hedrick announced significant benefits for Flight Attendants. The agreement addresses compensation, work rules, and retroactive pay. If approved, it will inject billions of additional dollars into Flight Attendant compensation and work rules.

The APFA Board of Directors and Executive Committee will review the tentative agreement. Hedrick credits the 28,000 Flight Attendants’ active participation for this achievement. Their efforts included numerous picketing events, media engagement, and public outreach.

A crucial factor was the 99.47% ‘yes’ vote for strike authorization. This overwhelming support pressured American Airlines management to address scheduling and economic concerns.

Hedrick emphasized the effectiveness of strikes and strike threats in achieving favorable contract terms. The agreement marks a significant milestone in the ongoing negotiations between Flight Attendants and American Airlines.

The airline views the agreement as a reflection of the flight attendants’ hard work and dedication. American Airlines believes the contract terms are both fair and competitive within the industry.

AFPA plans to schedule base visits at all 10 Flight Attendant crew bases. These visits will allow union representatives to explain the contract details and answer questions from members.

The next step in the process involves the APFA Board of Directors and Executive Committee reviewing the agreement. Their approval is necessary before the contract can be presented to the full membership for a ratification vote.

President of America, Joe Biden issued an official statement on agreement between AA and AFPA. He stated,

Collective bargaining works. I congratulate the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, their 25,000 members, and American Airlines for reaching a tentative agreement. And I thank Acting Secretary Su, Secretary Buttigieg, and other members of my Administration for their efforts to help both sides secure this agreement, which averts a strike that would have been devastating for the industry and consumers. This is the culmination of over 5 years of negotiations and proves once again that collective bargaining benefits workers, companies, and our economy. As the most pro-union and pro-worker president in American history, I’m proud of the record wages and record contracts secured by workers during my Administration. When unions are strong, our nation is strong.
