HONG KONG- Cathay Pacific Airlines (CX) Group CEO Ronald Lam joined Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on a six-day visit to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This trip highlights ASEAN’s importance to Cathay’s growth plans and Hong Kong’s economic future.

Lam explored local businesses and major infrastructure projects during the visit. He gained insights into recent developments and sought opportunities to strengthen trade, commerce, technology, and tourism ties between Hong Kong and ASEAN.

Cathay Pacific New Flights in ASEAN

Cathay aims to boost Hong Kong’s status as an international aviation hub. The airline plans to improve connections between Hong Kong, mainland China, and global destinations. Lam emphasized the growth potential in ASEAN markets.

Hong Kong International Airport’s new Three-Runway System will create expansion opportunities for Cathay. The airline intends to enhance existing routes and deepen its ASEAN network and partnerships.

Cathay Group, including Cathay Pacific and HK Express, currently serves 17 ASEAN destinations. The airlines operate over 360 weekly flights to these locations. This extensive network demonstrates Cathay’s commitment to global connectivity and reinforces Hong Kong’s position as an aviation hub.

HK Express Phu Quoc Flight

Cathay marks 75 years of flights to Vietnam, highlighting the country’s enduring significance to the airline group. Cathay Pacific and HK Express currently serve Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang. HK Express plans to launch flights to Phu Quoc in late 2024, expanding its Vietnamese network.

Cathay Pacific recently hired over 170 Vietnamese cabin crew members, showcasing Vietnam’s importance to its operations. This recruitment aligns with Hong Kong’s expanded talent schemes, allowing skilled professionals from Vietnam, Laos, and Nepal to work in Hong Kong since October 2023. Another recruitment drive in Vietnam is scheduled this month.

During the Cambodia visit, Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cambodia Airports CEO Cyril Girot. This agreement strengthens their partnership.

Cathay Pacific will increase its Phnom Penh flights from five weekly to daily starting October 27, 2024, reflecting growing customer demand and confidence in Cambodia’s market.
