Currently, Thai Lion Air (SL) offers direct flights between Mumbai and Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok. Subsequently, there are three carriers i.e. Air India (AI), IndiGo (6E), and Thai Airways (TG) that offer flights between Mumbai and Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), the main airport of the country.

Highs and Lows

Nok Air once operated direct flights between Bengaluru (BLR) and Bangkok from June to November 2007. Within six months it failed due to a low load factor. Bangalore-Bangkok was the airline’s first international route.

It also operated direct flights to Guwahati but terminated it amid low demand.

The airline had plans to launch flights to Chennai (MAA) and Delhi (DEL) but has to come into reality.

As of 2024, the 20-year-old carrier serves 16 domestic and five international destinations, including one in India (soon two) and four in China.

The airline has not reported a profit since 2014 and following covid-19 pandemic, it faced significant financial turmoil. It filed for bankruptcy. It also shut down its joint venture with Singapore Airlines Group-owned Scoot (TR) as NokScoot, which used to offer medium-to-long-haul flights to its travelers.

But it received a loan of US$828 million to stay afloat during a pandemic and it is on its path to recovery.

The airline has a fleet of 14 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, all named after bird emotions.
