Bastian commended Spanos’ leadership during his tenure at Delta, highlighting improvements in airline performance and a significant reduction in workplace injuries in 2024. The CEO stated that Delta does not plan to immediately fill the COO position, opting instead for upper leadership to report directly to him.

Spanos joined Delta in 2023, bringing experience from previous leadership roles at Six Flags and Pepsi. His departure follows a recent operational crisis at Delta caused by a major CrowdStrike outage.

While Bastian’s memo did not mention the incident, Delta reported a $500 million cost impact and plans to seek compensation from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.

In compliance with Securities and Exchange Commission regulations, Delta filed a Form 8-K to inform shareholders of this significant change in leadership. The filing ensures transparency regarding events that could potentially affect the company’s financial status or stock price.

In separate news, Delta Air Lines extends its free Wi-Fi service to select long-haul international flights this summer.

The Atlanta-based airline has partnered with Viasat and T-Mobile to offer fast, complimentary internet connectivity, advancing towards its goal of providing free Wi-Fi across its global fleet.
