CINCINNATI- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have jointly certified a critical hardware durability upgrade for CFM LEAP-1A engine powering Airbus A320neo aircraft, targeting improved performance in challenging operational environments.
The newly certified durability kit includes strategic component upgrades: the high-pressure turbine (HPT) stage 1 blade, HPT stage 1 nozzle, and forward inner nozzle support. These engineered components are specifically designed to extend engine operational time, particularly in extreme temperatures and harsh geographical conditions.
CFM LEAP-1A Engine Gets Upgrade
CFM International developed an unprecedented engineering approach to validate the durability improvements, collaborating with geologists to create a proprietary dust ingestion testing system. This innovative methodology precisely replicated real-world engine wear patterns by generating synthetic dust that mimics environmental conditions encountered globally.
Gaël Méheust, president and CEO of CFM International, emphasized the upgrade’s significance, stating the new hardware fulfills the company’s commitment to matching the maturity and durability standards established by their successful CFM56 product line.
The LEAP engine family continues to demonstrate remarkable technological advancement, delivering 15-20 percent improvements in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while significantly reducing noise pollution compared to previous-generation engines.
With over 3,500 LEAP-powered aircraft in service, the engine has enabled CFM customers to prevent approximately 40 million tons of CO2 emissions.
This certification represents a milestone in CFM’s 50-year history, with the LEAP engine achieving the fastest engine flight hour ramp-up in industry history by surpassing 60 million operational hours in just eight years.
CFM International, established in 1974 as a groundbreaking 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, has fundamentally transformed the landscape of commercial aviation through strategic international collaboration.
