American Airlines Dallas to Madrid Flight Diverted to New York

NEW YORK- On August 7, American Airlines (AA) flight AA36 from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD), Spain was forced to divert to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) due to an overflowing lavatory.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.

American Airlines Flight Diverted to JFK

According to Flight Radar 24 data, American Airlines flight AA36 took off from Dallas at 10:53 PM UTC. After being airborne for around two hours and 30 minutes, the flight attendant reported an issue with the lavatory.

The aircraft was flying over New York state and after burning extra fuel, the aircraft made a precautionary landing at JFK at 2:23 AM UTC.

The Spain-bound flight was operated by Boeing 777-200(ER), registered as N751AN. According to Planespotters.net data, it is a 23.4-year-old aircraft and is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines.

American Airlines spokesperson stated,

On Aug. 7, American Airlines flight 36 with service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD) diverted to New York (JFK) due to a maintenance issue. The aircraft landed normally and is scheduled to re-depart [Thursday] evening on a new aircraft. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience.

Yes, the flight has departed for Madrid, Spain and at the time of publication of this post, the flight has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is entering European land. This flight is operated by another 777-200ER registered as N770AN.

While N751AN, which faced the lavatory issue is operating New York to Madrid flight AA94 and will land in MAD shortly.

According to the published schedule, American Airlines operates daily flights between Dallas and Madrid. It also has a daily codeshare flight operated by Iberia (IB)’s A330. Subsequently, AA operates daily flights between New York JFK and Madrid and two codeshare flights operated by Iberia’s A350s and sometimes A330s.

Similar Incidents

This is not the first time that American Airlines faced issues with its lavatory on international flights.

Earlier this year, American Airlines flight AA293 from Delhi (DEL) to New York (JFK) operated a flight with four flooded lavatories. The airline compensated customers who reported the inconvenience. Further, It was found that the issue might have been caused by a passenger flushing a diaper.

Last year, American Airlines operated a redeye flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK) with non-functional electrical systems. Following this, Flight attendants were unable to prepare food in the galley, and power was unavailable for reclining in business and first-class seats.

A passenger, seated in first class (3F), disclosed on FlyerTalk.com, “The cabin exit strips and the emergency light in toilets were illuminated [but] toilets did not flush.
