The airport today (Juen 24, 2024) issued a statement stating that, “Given the current construction progress, we anticipate starting commercial operations by the end of April 2025. We are collaborating closely with our EPC contractor, Tata Projects Ltd, and other stakeholders to maintain the momentum of construction activities and ensure operational readiness.”

The Noida International Airport has awarded concessions for ground handling, commercial area operations, and critical maintenance contracts.

In its first phase, the airport is projected to handle 12 million passengers and manage 96,400 flights annually. Spanning 1,334 hectares in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, the airport is located 72 kilometers from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, 52 kilometers from Noida, and 130 kilometers from Agra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for Noida International Airport in November 2021.

Modeled after Switzerland’s Zurich Airport, it is being constructed by Zurich Airport International AG, which manages 10 airports globally, including Zurich and eight in Latin America. Further, the Zurich Airport previously held a 17% stake in Bengaluru airport, exiting in 2016.

The concession period for Jewar airport began on October 1, 2021, and will last for 40 years. The airport has partnered with multiple airlines, with low-cost carrier IndiGo (6E) Airlines set to be the launch carrier.

The central government has set an ambitious target of reaching 10 million tonnes of air cargo by 2030. Presently, 90 percent of India’s international cargo is handled by foreign carriers.
