British Airways 787 Grounded at Lagos Amid Technical Issues

LAGOS- UK’s flag carrier British Airways (BA) which was supposed to operate flight from Murtala International Airport (LOS), Lagos to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) has grounded Boeing 787 due to technical issues.

 Mrs Tutu Otuyalo, the Regional Commercial Manager, Nigeria and Ghana for British Airways apologized to passengers for such issues. She told the passengers that the airline would bear the cost of accommodation and meals for all passengers.

British Airways 787 Grounded in Lagos

Mrs. Otuyalo told reporters on Friday (June 21, 2024) that majority of passengers are provided seats on other flights to London. Furthermore, they are working to accomodate remaining passengers as soon as possible. She also added,

We would never operate a flight unless it is safe to do so. Most of the affected passengers have been re-accommodated to other flights.

We have been in contact with our customers to apologise for the delay in their flight caused by a technical issue with the aircraft.”

As per the reports, the airline has accomodated its passengers on flights operated by Delta Air Lines (DL) and Virgin Atlantic (VS).

The incident occured on June 19 (Wednesday), when British Airways flight BA74 was preparing for its return journey from Lagos to London.

The flight was schedule to be operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered as G-ZBKI. The aircraft is 8.3-year-old and is powered by Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines.

As of June 22, the aircraft is still on ground at Lagos. However, the Flight Radar 24 data indicates that the aircraft is likely to operate ferry flight as BA1074 to London today.

London-based carrier operates daily non-stop flight between Nigeria and UK. BA74 flight departs from Lagos at 10:50 PM and after covering 4,990 KMs it lands at London at 5:25 AM local time.
