Cathay Pacific Unveils New Premium Economy for 777s and A350s

HONG KONG- Cathay Pacific (CX), an award-winning international airline based in Hong Kong, is set to redefine the premium economy class experience with its new fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

In a recent interview about the changes, Cathay Pacific’s General Manager of Customer Experience and Design, Vivian Lo, emphasized that flying premium economy is “more than just a seat; it’s an experience.”

Cathay Pacific Premium Economy

With a focus on a premium cabin, the airline has adopted a human-centric approach to designing the new premium economy experience for passengers.

Scheduled for full deployment in early 2027, Cathay Pacific has made significant upgrades to the premium economy experience it has offered since 2012.

These enhancements aim to make long-haul flights more comfortable, necessitating adjustments to various elements, starting with the seat.

While the seat size in the new premium economy remains unchanged, passengers will notice more accommodating ergonomics. Enhancements include improved seat padding and leg rests for added comfort, particularly for those looking to rest.

The new wing-shaped headrest provides a sense of privacy, and the LED reading lamp has been repositioned from above the passenger to the seat, allowing for better lighting whether seated upright or reclined. Additionally, the process of deploying and stowing tables in the premium economy has been automated with buttons.

Cathay Pacific has also upgraded its entertainment system for premium economy passengers. The new setup features 15.6-inch 4K TV screens with an updated graphical user interface. Bluetooth pairing is now available, enabling passengers to use their own headphones with the in-flight entertainment system.

Elevated Dining Options

To enhance the overall experience, Cathay Pacific has elevated the dining options for premium economy passengers.

The airline has partnered with popular Hong Kong restaurant groups to offer diverse culinary choices. Collaborations include Italian comfort food from Pirata, traditional Hong Kong flavours from Duddell’s, and vegetarian options from Veda and Plant Sifu.

These partnerships ensure a variety of high-quality, flavorful dining options, including Jain and plant-based meals, catering to health-conscious travelers.

To enhance its updated menu, Cathay Pacific has drawn inspiration from local sources for adjustments to their wine selection.

Collaborating with some of China’s leading winemakers, the airline has refreshed its wine offerings for premium economy passengers, including Domaine de Long Dai 2020 from Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite.

Additional upgrades to the premium economy experience on the Boeing 777-300ER include two dedicated washrooms for these passengers.

Demonstrating their commitment to this class, Cathay Pacific will add 16 premium economy seats to their Boeing 777-300ER models compared to other aircraft in their fleet. The current Airbus A350s are also candidates for future retrofitting with these enhancements.
