Cessna Plane Crash in Residential Region near Portland Airport, 3 Dead 🔴

PORTLAND- A twin-engine Cessna 421C plane crashed into a residential area near Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon on Saturday (August 31, 2024) morning.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time.

Small Plane Crash in Portland

Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis confirmed the aircraft carried two people. The crash impacted a townhome complex, displacing five families and leaving one person unaccounted for.

Social media footage showed a significant fire and smoke plume rising above the treeline in Fairview, with visible damage to at least one house in the neighborhood. The crash site is also near Troutdale Airport, a facility known for flight training and recreational aviation.

Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that the aircraft broke into multiple parts upon impact. Authorities have not yet released official information regarding injuries or fatalities.

Multiple emergency response units, including Gresham Fire, The Port of Portland, Portland Fire and Rescue, and Clackamas Fire, mobilized to combat the fire at the crash site. Residents reported power outages in the surrounding area.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the crash. Their findings will be crucial in determining the cause of the accident and potentially informing future aviation safety measures.

Similar Incidents: Tough Week

In addition to above mentioned incident, the FAA reported crashes involving small planes this week. Five separate crashes involving single-engine aircraft occurred within a week, spanning California, Oregon, New Jersey, and Nebraska.

On August 31, 2024, an Aero Commander 200D crashed into a hangar at Gnoss Field Airport in Novato, California. The incident occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. local time, with only the pilot on board.

A day earlier, on August 30, a Silvaire Luscombe 8A went down in a field near Bend Municipal Airport in Oregon around 2 p.m. local time. Again, the pilot was the sole occupant.

On August 27, a Champion Citabria crashed in Sussex, New Jersey, at approximately 7 p.m. local time. The pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft.

August 26 saw the discovery of a Piper PA-28’s wreckage in a field near Wayne, Nebraska. The aircraft was found around 10:45 a.m. local time, with only the pilot involved.

The earliest incident in this series occurred on August 25, when a Pitts S-1 crashed shortly after takeoff from Santa Paula Airport in California. The accident happened around 12:25 p.m. local time, with the pilot as the sole occupant.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate all five incidents. The NTSB will lead these investigations and provide updates as they become available.
