COMAC Conducts First SAF Flights with New C919 and ARJ21

SHANGHAI- The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) announced on Wednesday that an ARJ21 regional jet and a C919 large passenger aircraft completed their inaugural demonstration flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The flights, which took off from Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) and Dongying Airport (DOY) in Shandong respectively, lasted over an hour, demonstrating excellent flight performance with SAF.

The SAF used in these flights was produced using a bio-jet fuel production technology independently developed by Sinopec. This SAF is made from waste oil sourced from restaurant leftovers, commonly referred to as “gutter oil.”

After collection and processing, this waste oil is converted into bio-jet fuel at Sinopec’s Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company, which operates the country’s first industrial facility for producing bio-jet fuel.

This sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is blended with the widely used Jet A-1 aviation kerosene at a 40 percent ratio. The physical properties of this blended fuel match those of traditional petroleum-based fuels, meeting both national standards and industry requirements.

SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 percent over its entire lifecycle compared to traditional aviation fuels.

The adoption of SAF is a vital strategy for the civil aviation industry to combat global climate change and lower carbon emissions.

Major international aircraft manufacturers, global airlines, and tech companies are actively researching the practical application of SAF.

In China, over ten enterprises and research institutions are involved in SAF development and production, with several airlines having conducted commercial test flights using domestically produced SAF.
