Delta Issuing Refunds for Flight Cancellations and Delays Amid CrowdStrike Outage

ATLANTA- Delta Air Lines (DL) addresses the aftermath of the CrowdStrike outage with customer-focused solutions as it offers refunds for canceled or significantly delayed flights.

Passengers can cancel their trips through Delta.com or the Fly Delta app. Automatic refunds apply to the unused portion of the journey.

Delta CrowdStrike Outage Flight Refunds

Since July 19, 70% of refunds were processed online. Delta extends its refund policy for travelers booked between July 19-28. Customers who decide not to fly can request refunds for unused portions of their trips. This policy applies regardless of flight cancellations or delays.

The enhanced refund flexibility covers Delta-operated flights with tickets purchased by July 23.

Delta Airlines has expanded its reimbursement policy following recent flight disruptions. The airline covers unexpected expenses incurred between July 19 and July 28. Eligible costs now include tickets from other airlines, train and bus fares, rental cars, and ride shares.

Delta maintains its commitment to cover reasonable expenses in additional categories. The airline introduces a streamlined online reimbursement process. Customers can submit claims through Delta’s Temporary Reimbursement Waiver page. The process requires:

• Receipt images

Delta’s Check Reimbursement Case Status page allows customers to track their claims. The airline bolsters its Customer Care team to handle increased reimbursement requests.

Delta implements automated processing methods to accelerate reimbursements. The company aims to process all claims within 30 days, potentially faster.

Refunds for Bag and Seat Fees 

The Atlanta-based airline automatically refunds all checked bag fees charged since July 19. Delta extends its baggage fee waiver for up to three bags through July 28.

The company also refunds seat upgrades and preferred seat purchases for unused services. These refunds process automatically, requiring no customer action. Delta returns all refunds to the original payment method. Customers may see separate transactions for flight and fee refunds.

The airline emails instructions for out-of-pocket expense reimbursements to eligible customers. Delta offers SkyMiles or electronic Transportation Credit Vouchers to passengers affected by cancellations or significant delays.

The airline extends its travel waiver for bookings from July 19-28. This waiver allows a one-time itinerary change without fare difference if rebooked by August 4. Delta encourages customers to manage changes through its website or app.

The company clarifies it doesn’t reimburse prepaid expenses like hotel reservations or event tickets.

DOT Investigate

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has launched an investigation into Delta Air Lines’ recent operational issues. This probe follows Delta’s difficulties in recovering from the global CrowdStrike outage.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg revealed the investigation on Tuesday (July 23, 2024). The agency aims to verify Delta’s compliance with federal laws. Investigators will also assess Delta’s customer care efforts during the disruption. Buttigieg wrote on X

A Delta spokesperson addresses the ongoing situation. The airline attributes the disruption to CrowdStrike, its cybersecurity vendor. A faulty Windows update caused global IT system failures. Delta emphasizes its focus on restoring normal operations.
