Silk Way Airlines 747 Incident

According to Aviation Herald, the Silk Way West Airlines 747-400 cargo aircraft aborted its takeoff at Tokyo Narita Airport during a high-speed run on runway 34L. The aircraft, registered as 4K-SW008, was operating flight 7L904 from Tokyo Narita to Baku (GYD) when the incident occurred.

The crew rejected the takeoff at approximately 140 knots ground speed, managing to slow the aircraft and exit the runway via a high-speed turnoff. After stopping, they reported an engine fire in the number 2 engine, located on the inboard left side of the aircraft.

The flight crew discharged both fire bottles in an attempt to extinguish the blaze. They believed the fire was successfully put out but reported hot brakes, prompting a call for emergency services.

Responding emergency teams cooled the aircraft’s brakes. However, several tires deflated due to the intense heat generated during the high-speed abort.

As per FlightRadar24 data, the aircraft is still in Tokyo. It will fly to Baku on August 17, 2024.

Silk Way West is an Azerbaijan-based freighter operator and sister of Silk Way Airlines (ZP). The Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Baku-based carrier operates a fleet of 12 aircraft including five 747-400, five 747-8, and two 777Fs. As of August 2024, it serves 36 destinations in Asia, Europe, and North America.

Atlas Air 747 Emergency Landing

The next day (August 12, 2024), Atlas Air Boeing 747-400 freighter encountered a hydraulic failure shortly after takeoff from Tokyo Narita Airport. The aircraft, registered N404KZ, was operating flight 5Y7106 to Los Angeles (LAX) when the incident occurred.

The crew halted their climb at 14,000 feet and descended to 10,000 feet after reporting the hydraulic issue. They entered a holding pattern to assess the situation and prepare for an emergency landing.

After approximately 3.5 hours of flight time, the aircraft landed on Narita’s runway 16R. Upon inspection, two aft left body gear tires and their corresponding wheels were found damaged, immobilizing the aircraft on the runway.
