The airport’s launch brings exciting new travel opportunities to the region. easyJet will begin routes to Basel (BSL), Geneva (GVA), and Berlin (BER) tomorrow, with a London Gatwick (LGW) connection starting on July 13.

The airline is offering around 50,000 seats for the summer season, contributing to a total of nearly 3 million seats available for flights to and from Campania.

Located just 20 minutes south of Salerno, the new airport provides an ideal gateway to the southern Amalfi Coast. Originally a military facility built in 1926, it has been transformed into a state-of-the-art commercial hub designed with sustainability in mind, focusing on minimizing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

While a new passenger terminal is set to be completed in 2026, the airport is already welcoming a limited flight service.

Other Airines Coming Soon

Several airlines are seizing the opportunity to establish routes to this attractive destination. Volotea (V7) will offer flights from Nantes, Cagliari, Catania, and Verona, with fares starting as low as $30.

Universal Air (UW) plans to launch biweekly flights from Malta on July 25. Subsequently Ryanair (FR) will introduce routes from London Stansted, Milan Bergamo, and Turin in August.

For travelers from the United States, the most convenient option currently is to fly direct to London or Milan and then connect to Salerno. This new airport significantly enhances accessibility to Salerno and the stunning Amalfi Coast, making it an even more appealing destination for tourists.

Leisure Destination

Imagine an airport with as many lives as a cat! That’s the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport for you. Born way back in 1926, this plucky little airfield has worn many hats over the years.

Picture it: First, it was a no-nonsense military base, all serious business. Then, it transformed into a flying school, where aspiring pilots learned to spread their wings. Later, it became a firefighting center, helping to keep the beautiful Amalfi coast safe from wildfires. For a while, it even enjoyed life as a laid-back private airport.

In 2007, the airport decided to try its hand at commercial flights. But like a moody Italian romance, that phase didn’t last long, and it closed its doors again in 2016.

But here’s the exciting part – after a major makeover that would make any home renovation show jealous, Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is back and better than ever! It’s all dolled up and ready to welcome travelers from around the world.

The Salerno – Costa d’Amalfi airport is set for a long-term expansion, with authorities planning continued development until 2043. By then, they hope to welcome a whopping six million passengers annually. That’s a lot of gelato-eating, beach-lounging travelers!

This growth is music to the ears of many local businesses. Hotels, restaurants, and tour operators along the picturesque coastline are gearing up for a potential boom in tourism. More visitors mean more opportunities for these businesses to showcase the region’s famous hospitality and stunning landscapes.

Concerns from Local

However, it’s not all sunshine and limoncello. Some locals and environmental groups are raising important questions about how this influx of tourists might affect the area. They’re concerned about whether the current roads, public transportation, and other facilities can handle so many more people.

There’s also worry about preserving the natural beauty that makes the Amalfi Coast so special. After all, part of the region’s charm is its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush hillsides. Balancing economic growth with environmental protection will be a key challenge as the airport expands.
