easyJet London to Lisbon Flight Pilot Lose Consciousness Mid-Air

LONDON- An easyJet (U2) pilot (first officer) fainted mid-flight today (July 27, 2024), causing concern on a London to Lisbon (LIS) route.

The flight operated by Airbus A320, carrying 193 passengers, likely departed from London Luton Airport (LTN).

The pilot successfully landed the aircraft without incident in Lisbon. Paramedics met the plane on the runway to provide immediate medical attention to the unconscious co-pilot.

Emergency responders then transported the co-pilot to Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital for further treatment.

The nature and severity of the UK-based low-cost carrier’s co-pilot condition remain unclear.

Similar Incidents

In-flight medical emergencies among crew members continue to challenge airlines. Last December, a Ryanair (FR) flight from London Stansted (STN) to Morocco diverted to Faro Airport (FAO) when the pilot fell ill.

The Ryanair pilot informed passengers of his condition before initiating the emergency landing. This announcement triggered a “red alert” at Faro Airport, activating emergency response protocols.

Faro Airport’s emergency teams successfully managed the situation, ensuring passenger safety during the unscheduled landing. Ryanair quickly arranged an alternative aircraft and crew to complete the journey to Morocco.

EasyJet faced another in-flight emergency last April when a London Gatwick (LGW) to Agadir (AGA) flight diverted to Faro. The First Officer’s sudden illness prompted the unscheduled landing.

The Captain executed a safe landing following standard procedures. Faro Airport activated a red alert, mobilizing emergency services to meet the aircraft upon arrival.

EasyJet quickly arranged a replacement crew to complete the journey to Agadir. This swift action minimized disruption to passengers’ travel plans.

The recurring nature of such diversions may prompt aviation authorities to reassess current health monitoring practices for flight crews. Airlines might consider implementing more frequent or comprehensive health checks for pilots and co-pilots.
