CHENNAI- Flag carrier of UAE, Emirates Airlines (EK) flight from Chennai International Airport (MAA) to Dubai International Airport (DXB) reported smoke on the ground at MAA.
According to reports, there were 280 passengers onboard the flight. The smoke created a panic and havoc situation at Chennai Airport.
Emirates Flight Smoke
The incident occurred at night on Tuesday (September 24, 2024). According to flight tracking website, FlightRadar24 data, Emirates flight EK547 was expected to take off from Chennai at 10:00 PM local time, but due to smoke, the flight was delayed.
The flight crew promptly alerted airport officials upon noticing the smoke from APU. Technical experts were immediately dispatched to inspect the aircraft. Within approximately 10 minutes, the smoke ceased, according to airport authorities. Fire tenders also arrived at the scene as a precautionary measure.
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), a compact gas turbine engine located in the aircraft’s tail cone, provides essential autonomous electrical and mechanical power. Its primary function involves supplying starting power for the main engines
The incident occurred while the aircraft was undergoing refueling procedures before its departure. Airport authorities have not immediately disclosed the cause of the smoke.
Following this, the flight departed at 12:30 AM IST and landed safely in Dubai at around 2:30 AM local time.
The flight EK547 was operated by Boeing 777-300ER, registered as A6-ECZ. It is a 14.7-year-old aircraft and is powered by GE90 engines.

A Singapore Airlines (SQ) Boeing 787-10 experienced brake issues and smoke upon landing at Tokyo Narita International Airport on August 12, 2024. White smoke billowed from the aircraft’s left engine at 7:38 am local time, prompting immediate action from ground crews.
The airline’s spokesperson confirmed the technical problem, stating that engineers swiftly addressed the issue and replaced a tire on the affected aircraft.
In a similar incident on September 8, 2023, an Air India A320 aircraft arriving from Mumbai encountered a smoke-related emergency at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport.
Airport firefighters quickly responded, dousing the smoke with water. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.
