According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the aircraft’s braking problem caused it to extend beyond the designated stopping point on Runway 2/20.

Fortunately, all 173 passengers and six crew members aboard the flight were reported safe, with no injuries or damage to the aircraft.

In response to the incident, airport authorities temporarily closed the affected runway, leading to the diversion of one larger mainland-bound flight to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. However, interisland flights continued to operate using the alternate Runway 5/23 during the closure.

The Airbus A321neo involved in the incident, registered as N227HA and approaching seven years in service, has been temporarily removed from the airline’s fleet for comprehensive assessment. The aircraft is equipped with Meggitt’s advanced NuCarb carbon brakes, which are designed to enhance performance and reliability under various conditions.

Official Remark

Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson Kealii Pang stated, “We are grateful that all passengers and crew are safe. Our maintenance team is conducting a thorough inspection of the aircraft to determine the exact cause of the brake malfunction.”

Aviation experts note that while runway overshoots can occur due to various factors including adverse weather, mechanical failures, or pilot error, the swift response by Hawaiian Airlines and airport authorities in this case helped ensure passenger safety.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation reported that Runway 2/20 was reopened shortly after 2:30 p.m., allowing normal airport operations to resume. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of constant vigilance and well-coordinated responses in maintaining aviation safety.

As investigations into the brake malfunction continue, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for any potential residual delays or changes to flight schedules at Kahului Airport.
