Iberia is Now the Launch Customer of Airbus A321XLR

MADRID- IAG Group-backed Iberia (IB) will soon introduce the new Airbus aircraft, becoming the first in the world to receive the A321XLR by the end of the summer.

This aircraft will enhance Iberia’s long-haul fleet with more sustainable and innovative capabilities, allowing the airline to operate transoceanic routes using a narrow-body, single-aisle aircraft.

This addition will expand Iberia’s network of destinations, particularly focusing on America. The A321XLR’s range will enable more efficient fleet utilization based on market demand.

The first long-haul destinations for this new model are expected to be Washington DC (IAD) and then Boston (BOS).

As with all newly delivered planes, it will initially operate on medium-range routes for the first few days.

Premium Airliner

One of the major innovations of the A321XLR is its capability to perform long-haul flights as a single-aisle aircraft, while still offering a premium service comparable to wide-body models like the A330s and A350s in Iberia’s fleet.

This model will feature 182 seats in a Business and Economy cabin configuration and includes various enhancements for passenger comfort, such as larger overhead compartments that can store up to 60% more carry-on luggage, six different cabin lighting styles, and an innovative panel at the plane’s entrance.

In the Business cabin, the A321XLR will have 14 individual window seats with direct aisle access. These seats are designed for maximum comfort, featuring ‘full flat’ seats that convert into beds, wide leather headrests, compartments for personal items, and structures providing great comfort and privacy.

Each Business seat will also have an 18-inch individual 4K screen, offering sharper images and better tones in dark mode, along with the best entertainment options available on board.

For enhanced comfort, each seat will feature an individually adjustable lighting system, allowing passengers to set their preferred environment. Additionally, each seat number will be backlit during night mode for easier identification.

New Seats

The Airbus A321XLR will also include 168 seats in the Economy cabin, equipped with the latest Recaro model, the CL3810, which is an evolution of the seats on current long-haul aircraft. These seats offer a four-inch recline and leather headrests, along with two additional pockets for personal item storage.

All cabins in the new A321XLR will allow passengers to connect their own headphones via Bluetooth. They will also feature improved USB charging ports of type A and C. The seat trays are designed to hold electronic devices for more convenient use.

Similar to the rest of the long-haul fleet, the A321XLR will provide connectivity for customers to access free WiFi for messaging throughout the flight.

Lastly, the plane will be equipped with four bathrooms featuring antibacterial surfaces, motion-sensor faucets, and pedal-operated waste containers.

Sustainable Aircraft

Aligned with Iberia’s commitment to reducing emissions, the A321XLR will operate long-haul flights more sustainably, using approximately 30% less fuel than wide-body models.

The first A321XLR is set to join Iberia’s fleet after the summer. Along with the seven additional aircraft of this model that Iberia will receive in the following months, this will enable the airline to expand its network of long-haul destinations and increase capacity in its current destinations.
