IndiGo Hired 5,000 New Employees in 6 Months, 60 Percent Under 25 Age

GURUGRAM- IndiGo Airlines (6E), India’s largest domestic carrier, has experienced significant growth in its workforce as the airline hired 5,000 new employees in just six months, with over 60% of these new hires under 25 years old.

This rapid expansion highlights the company’s commitment to tapping into India’s youthful demographic and its potential in the aviation sector.

IndiGo Hired Young Employees

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers shared this update in his LinkedIn post and emphasized on the diverse range of roles filled by these new recruits, including cabin crew, engineers, pilots, marketers, legal experts, and check-in agents.

He also wrote on LinkedIn, a Hindi phrase, “Seekhte raho, Badhte raho” (which means keep learning, keep progressing)

This variety of positions supports IndiGo’s daily operations, enabling the airline to serve over 300,000 customers each day.

The CEO actively engages with young talent and future industry leaders. He recently conducted a session on transformational leadership with upcoming IndiGo leaders.

Elbers also interacted with students at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) and the Indian School of Hospitality in Gurugram, sharing insights and experiences with aspiring aviation professionals.

Reflecting on his own career, Elbers expressed gratitude for the learning opportunities he encountered since joining the aviation industry at age 22. He stressed the importance of continuous learning in attracting and retaining top talent, a principle IndiGo actively implements in its human resource strategy.

He started his career with KLM Airlines (KL) in 1992 and before joining IndiGo as CEO he worked in various roles with KLM for almost 30 years.

IndiGo’s approach to talent management involves a blend of developing existing employees (referred to as “6E stars”) and integrating new hires. This strategy aims to combine internal experience, culture, and loyalty with fresh perspectives and ambitions brought by newcomers.

As IndiGo works towards its goal of becoming a global airline of the future, Elbers expressed excitement about working with the energetic, passionate, and curious young workforce. He emphasized that regardless of age, the key to success in the aviation industry lies in continuous learning and progression.

Hiring 77 Female Pilot

IndiGo Airlines hired 77 female pilots on August 14, 2024, commemorating India’s 77 years of independence. This strategic recruitment boosts IndiGo’s female pilot count to over 800, reinforcing its commitment to gender diversity in aviation.

The induction comprised 72 pilots for the Airbus fleet and 5 for the ATR fleet. IndiGo’s female pilot workforce now stands at 14%, surpassing the global average of 5-8%.

Captain Ashim Mitra, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, emphasized IndiGo’s dedication to fostering workplace diversity and inclusivity. The airline has implemented life cycle initiatives allowing female pilots with children under five to opt for reduced flying contracts, enhancing work-life balance.

As of March 31, 2024, IndiGo employed 36,860 permanent staff, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew members.
