Japan Airlines to Offer Free Wi-Fi on Domestic and Int’l Flights

TOKYO- Japan Airlines (JAL) will revolutionize its inflight Wi-Fi service starting October 1, 2024, significantly improving passengers’ onboard experience.

The airline is expanding its Wi-Fi offerings across both international and domestic flights, introducing free access and enhanced capabilities.

Japan Airlines Free Wi-Fi

On international flights, JAL will provide complimentary Wi-Fi access to all passengers, regardless of class. First Class and Business Class travelers will enjoy unlimited free Wi-Fi, while Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers will receive one hour of free access.

This change marks a departure from the current system, where only First Class passengers receive free Wi-Fi. The new policy applies to all JAL-operated international flights, excluding code-share flights.

To access unlimited Wi-Fi, First Class and Business Class passengers will need an exclusive promotion code. Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers can extend their Wi-Fi usage beyond the free hour by purchasing additional time.

While the service allows for web browsing and social media use, it excludes video streaming services and prohibits voice and video calls.

JAL’s domestic flights will also see improvements in their Wi-Fi offerings. The airline will expand its current free Wi-Fi service to include video streaming capabilities. This upgrade applies to flights operated by JAL, JTA, and J-AIR’s Embraer 190 (E90) aircraft.

The enhanced service will launch on October 1, 2024, for most flights, with JTA-operated flights following in late December.

Domestic passengers can stream video content without downloading, in addition to the existing web browsing and email services. However, the airline notes that passengers can only access streaming services for which they have existing viewing contracts.

Flights equipped with individual screens (A350, 787-8) will also have website access restrictions due to system limitations.

28 News Stations

Japan Airlines (JAL) continues to enhance its inflight connectivity offerings, partnering with TBS and JNN NEWS DIG to bring passengers access to ‘TBS NEWS DIG Powered by JNN’.

This collaboration will enable travelers to view news content from 28 JNN stations while in the air, bridging the information gap between ground and sky. The launch of this news service is slated for the latter half of 2024, further enriching the inflight experience for JAL passengers.

These expansions aim to create an onboard environment that closely mirrors the connectivity and information access passengers enjoy on the ground. By providing real-time news and enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities, JAL seeks to keep its customers informed and connected throughout their journey.

Looking ahead, JAL Group has announced plans to introduce Boeing 737-8 aircraft to its fleet in fiscal 2026. These new planes will be equipped with cutting-edge inflight Wi-Fi systems, promising lower latency and higher capacity.

This technological upgrade will significantly improve the speed and reliability of onboard internet connections, ensuring a smoother and more efficient browsing experience for passengers.
