Lufthansa A380 Operated Munich to New York Flight Makes U-Turn

MUNICH- German flag carrier, Lufthansa Airlines (LH) Airbus A380 operating flight from Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauss (MUC) to New York (JFK) returned to Munich amid hydraulic problems on July 25, 2024.

Cologne-based carrier deploys A380 daily to four US destinations including Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), and Washington (IAD).

Lufthansa A380 Emergency Landing

The plane, carrying 508 passengers, was over the UK when pilots decided to return to Munich.

Flight LH410 left Munich at 14:36 local time but turned around at 16:10 near Liverpool. It landed safely back in Munich at 17:41. Lufthansa canceled the return flight from New York to Munich scheduled for the same day.

A Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed the A380 experienced a technical problem with one of its four engines. The crew chose to return to Munich as a precaution. All passengers disembarked safely and were rebooked on other flights to the US.

Despite the mid-flight issue, the problem appeared minor. The same A380 departed again for New York the next day at 13:40, expected to land at JFK at 15:44 local time.

Lufthansa’s Airbus A380, involved in the recent mid-flight turnaround, had undergone maintenance at Munich Airport for a week before its July 25 flight to New York. The aircraft, registered as D-AIMK, last flew from Los Angeles to Munich on flight LH453 before entering maintenance.

Airbus delivered this A380 to Lufthansa on March 28, 2014, though its first flight occurred on October 14, 2013.

As of May 31, the A380 had logged 32,678 flight hours and 3,635 flight cycles. These figures, provided by ch-aviation, indicate the aircraft’s extensive service history.

A380 Plans for Winter

Lufthansa announces major changes to its A380 routes for winter 2024/2025. New York, Boston, and Washington flights will switch to Airbus A350s or A340s. Los Angeles remains the sole US destination served by A380s.

Bangkok flight LH772 upgrades from A350 to A380 service. Delhi flight LH762 will use A380s year-round, replacing the current A340-600.

Lufthansa’s A380s offer 509 seats across four classes: 8 First, 78 Business, 52 Premium Economy, and 371 Economy. The airline plans to introduce a new Business Class with all-aisle access on these aircraft.

CEO Carsten Spohr announced in March that the first A380 with the new Business Class will fly in late 2025. This upgrade aims to enhance passenger comfort and competitiveness on long-haul routes.

Lufthansa stands out among airlines by operating both A380s and Boeing 747s in its fleet.
