Nepal Plane Crash: Saurya Airlines CRJ with 19 People Crash in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU- A Saurya Airlines (S1) Bombardier CRJ200LR/ER aircraft crashed during takeoff at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on Wednesday (July 24, 2024).

The plane, bound for Pokhara, carried 19 people including crew members. The accident occurred around 11 am, according to airport spokesperson Premnath Thakur.

Nepal’s aviation industry faces frequent safety challenges. The country experiences approximately one flight disaster annually. Since 2010, Nepal has witnessed at least 12 fatal plane crashes.

These incidents highlight the ongoing safety concerns in Nepal’s aviation sector. The country’s mountainous terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions contribute to the challenges faced by pilots and airlines operating in the region.

The recurring nature of these accidents raises questions about aviation safety standards and regulatory measures in Nepal. International aviation authorities and local officials continue to work on improving safety protocols and infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.

The latest Saurya Airlines crash adds to the growing list of aviation incidents in Nepal. As investigations begin, authorities will likely focus on determining the cause of the accident and implementing measures to enhance flight safety in the country.

In January 2023, a Yeti Airlines flight crashed near Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board. The plane plunged into a steep gorge, breaking apart and catching fire as it approached the city.

A Tara Air plane crash in Mustang district on May 29, 2022, resulted in 22 fatalities. In 2018, a US-Bangla Airlines flight crash-landed near Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, killing 51 people and seriously injuring 20 others.

Rescue teams have recovered five bodies from the Saurya Airlines crash site at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Captain MR Shakya has been rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Eyewitnesses report the plane flipped during takeoff from the southern end of the runway. The aircraft’s wing tip hit the ground, causing it to catch fire immediately. The plane then plunged into a gorge on the runway’s eastern side, between the Buddha Air hangar and the radar station.

Thick smoke billows from the airport, hampering visibility and rescue efforts. Police and firefighters are conducting rescue operations at the accident site, working to reach potential survivors and recover victims.

The crash location between the hangar and radar station poses challenges for rescue teams. This area’s terrain may complicate access and evacuation efforts.
