Gujarat is experiencing heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon progresses further into the state.

With forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Kutch, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Narmada, and Valsad districts.

Delhi Airport Roof Collapse

This comes a day after a tragic incident at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1, where a roof collapse early in the morning resulted in the death of a 45-year-old cab driver and injuries to eight others.

The incident has led to the indefinite suspension of operations at Terminal 1, which handles approximately 200 flights daily. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) reported that the roof at the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1 partially collapsed around 5 a.m. on Friday.

While the exact cause is still under investigation, heavy rainfall and strong winds are suspected to be contributing factors.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu has announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for the family of the deceased and ₹3 lakh each for those who sustained minor injuries.

The ministry has also mandated a structural preliminary inspection at all airports nationwide to prevent similar incidents.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 304A (death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

In a related incident, part of a fabric canopy collapsed at Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur airport on Thursday due to water accumulation amid heavy rains, crushing a car parked below.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had virtually inaugurated the ₹450-crore new terminal building of the Dumna airport on March 10.
