Southwest Boeing 737 Wing Collides with Breeze Airbus A220 at Richmond

RICHMOND- On August 7, 2024, Southwest Airlines (WN) Boeing 737 left wing collides with Breeze Airways (MX) Airbus A220 aircraft right wing at Richmond International Airport (RIC).

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken note of this incident and will conduct a thorough investigation.

Southwest 737 Collides with Breeze A220

According to the FAA, the incident occurred when Southwest Airlines operating flight WN3166 from Denver (DEN) to Richmond was taxing to the gate. At the same time, Breeze Airways flight MX116 from Tampa (TPA) to Richmond was also moving towards its gate.

Both plane wings struck with each other. Luckily no injuries were reported inside the aircraft or on the ground. By looking at the there flight data, it seems like a minor collision.

Following this, Breeze Airways canceled its return flight MX117 to Tampa. The aircraft remained on the ground for less than 15 hours after the incident.

Southwest 737 was lucky as its next flight was the next morning (on August 8, 2024), and got time to inspect and repair the aircraft.

Well, this is not the first time that such a ground collision occurred. Especially with wings, they are extremely sensitive and need extra precaution on the ground.

Similar Incidents

In May 2024,  Former President of the United States, Donald Trump Boeing 757 aircraft wing hit a parked corporate plane at Florida Airport after landing and taxing. Trump’s Boeing 757 winglet touched the rear elevator of a parked VistaJet in West Palm Beach.

Subsequently, in April of this year, A collision occurred between a Virgin Atlantic (VS) Boeing 787 and a British Airways (BA) Airbus A350 at London Heathrow Airport (LHR). British Airways plane was carrying passengers and was scheduled to depart for Accra, while an empty Virgin 787 plane was being towed at Terminal 3.

In March 2024, Two Delta Air Lines A320-family aircraft wings contacted each other on the runway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).
