Southwest Eyes New Flights from Washington Reagan to Las Vegas and Sacramento

DALLAS- Southwest Airlines (WN) submitted a proposal to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) on July 17, 2024, requesting daily nonstop service between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas (LAS).

The airline seeks one of five new round-trip flights at DCA, made available through the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024.

Southwest Washington to Las Vegas

Southwest’s application has garnered support from political, community, and business leaders. Over half of the public comments filed with the DOT favor Southwest’s proposal. More than 11,000 U.S. travelers have endorsed the application.

The DCA to LAS route currently offers only one nonstop flight per day, operated by a competitor. Southwest’s entry would introduce the first head-to-head competition in this market. Throughout its 53-year history, Southwest has consistently shown that low-cost airline competition stimulates lower average fares, increased passenger traffic, and economic growth.

If approved, Southwest’s service would expand travel options across the western United States, including Nevada, California, and Hawaii. The airline has collaborated closely with the Clark County Department of Aviation, which owns and operates LAS.

Sacramento Flights

Southwest Airlines proposes to offer the only one-stop, same-plane service between DCA and Sacramento International Airport (SMF) via LAS. This direct flight would connect California’s capital to the nation’s capital, maximizing competitive and consumer benefits. Currently, no nonstop or direct service exists between DCA and SMF.

U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen emphasizes the importance of travel and tourism to Nevada’s economy. She states that increased flights to Las Vegas create more opportunities for visitors and bolster the local economy. The industry sustains hundreds of thousands of jobs and brings millions in economic development.

Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County Director of Aviation, reports strong support for the proposed route from local elected leaders, national unions, utility companies, and the business community.

She believes the service will open new opportunities for business and leisure travelers by enhancing competition, expanding access, and decreasing ticket prices.

Brook Sorem, Vice President of Network Planning at Southwest Airlines, states that the DCA to LAS route prioritizes customer choice and flexibility. He expects more customers to benefit from lower fares while experiencing Southwest’s hospitality and flexibility.
