Spirit Airlines Introduces Premium Seats, Priority Boarding and More

FLORIDA- Spirit Airlines (NK) is launching a major overhaul of its travel offerings, aiming to redefine the low-cost carrier experience with premium seats and more. The airline will introduce new premium options that allow passengers to customize their travel experience while maintaining affordable prices.

Starting August 16, Spirit will begin offering these new booking options. The complete transformation of the passenger experience is set to roll out by August 27, 2024. This move represents a significant shift in Spirit’s business model, balancing its low-fare reputation with enhanced comfort and service options.

Ted Christie, Spirit’s President and CEO, emphasized that this change comes in response to customer feedback. The airline aims to provide choices for an elevated experience that remains affordable and offers exceptional value. This strategy seeks to address the common criticism of budget airlines sacrificing comfort for low prices.

The new offerings will include premium selections, marking a departure from Spirit’s traditional no-frills approach.

Spirit Airlines is revolutionizing low-cost air travel with the introduction of four new travel options, each designed to offer exceptional value and meet diverse passenger needs.

The “Go Big” package represents Spirit’s foray into premium service. It includes a Big Front Seat, featuring wider dimensions, extra legroom, and no middle seat. Passengers will enjoy snacks, drinks (including alcohol), one carry-on, one checked bag, priority check-in and boarding, and access to high-speed Wi-Fi. While bookings start August 16, some features like snacks and priority check-in will roll out on August 27.

“Go Comfy” introduces a novel seating arrangement with a guaranteed blocked middle seat. This option includes one carry-on, one checked bag, priority boarding, and a snack with a non-alcoholic beverage. Bookings open August 16, with the full experience available from August 27.

The “Go Savvy” option caters to travelers seeking flexibility. It offers a choice between one carry-on or one checked bag, along with standard seat selection during booking. This option becomes available for booking and travel starting August 16.

For the most budget-conscious travelers, the “Go” option provides basic transportation with the flexibility to add services like checked bags, seat selection, Wi-Fi, and in-flight refreshments. This option also launches on August 16.

Notably, all four options include no change or cancellation fees, addressing a common pain point in budget air travel.

Priority Boarding

Starting August 27, 2024, the airline will introduce a priority check-in service at over 20 major airports including Atlanta, Cancun, Dallas-Fort Worth, and New York-LaGuardia. This dedicated lane will cater to “Go Big” passengers, Free Spirit Gold members, and Free Spirit World Elite Mastercard holders, offering expedited access to ticket counter agents.

The airline is also revamping its boarding process, introducing a new five-group system aimed at reducing boarding times and improving operational efficiency.

Priority boarding will be extended to passengers opting for “Go Big” and “Go Comfy” options, as well as loyalty program members and active-duty U.S. service members and their families.

Spirit has already implemented several passenger-friendly policies to increase flexibility and value. These include the elimination of change and cancellation fees for all passengers, an increased checked bag weight allowance of up to 50 pounds, and an extension of Future Travel Vouchers expiration to 12 months for vouchers issued from June 3, 2024.
