United Airlines 787 SFO-bound Flight Returned to Singapore After Hole in Engine

SINGAPORE- A United Airlines (UA) flight bound for San Francisco (SFO) had to return to Singapore (SIN) on Tuesday (May 14, 2024) due to an engine issue.

United Flight UA28, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, ascended to approximately 31,000 feet before the 9-year-old aircraft turned back to Singapore Changi Airport to address the issue.

United 787 Return to Singapore

According to Flight Radar 24 data, the United flight UA28 took from Singapore at 1:36 PM UTC, it was expected to land in San Francisco at 8:55 PM local time.

After 30 minutes at around 2:10 PM UTC, the flight crew reported issues with the left engine and contacted Singapore ATC.

At 2:26 PM UTC, the flight squnk7500 landed back in Singapore at around 3:04 PM UTC.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in its preliminary report stated that: “The aircraft took off, but shortly after departure, experienced a #1 left engine failure and had to return to the airport. Post-flight inspection uncovered a hole in the left engine cowling and engine case, in Singapore.”

The flight, which carried 197 passengers and 14 crew members, landed safely, and all passengers disembarked without any issues, confirmed a United Airlines spokesperson to the Chronicle. However, the rest of the journey was canceled.

“We’re arranging hotel accommodations and meal vouchers in Singapore for passengers, who will be rebooked on another flight departing Wednesday using a different aircraft,” the spokesperson stated.

The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner registered as N27957. It is 8 8-year-old and 8-month-old jet powered by two General Electric-made GEnX engines.

The United 787 is still grounded in Singapore after almost 30 hours (at the time of publication).
