United Airlines San Francisco to Hawaii Flight Suffers Severe Turbulence

SAN FRANCISCO- On June 18, 2024, Passengers onboard a United Airlines (UA) flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Kahului (OGG), Hawaii experienced severe turbulence.

Research data from the American Geophysical Union and the University of Reading show a significant increase in turbulence over the past four decades.

United Airlines Turbulence

According to Aviation Herald, due to strong and gusty turbulence the oxygen masks was automatically deployed.

Now lets see the flight timeline with help of FlightRadar24 data. United Airlines flight UA1273 took off from San Francisco at 4:04 PM UTC. After flying over the Pacific Ocean at 33,000 feet, the aircraft somewhere over the ocean reported turbulence.

Following this the oxygen masks was deployed, further the flight crew announced that there is issue with some sensor. After being airborne for almost four hours and 50 minutes the flight landed safely at Kahului at 8:54 PM UTC.

The flight was operated by Boeing 777-200, registered as N777UA. It is one of the oldest active Boeing 777 and its a 29.2-year old and is powered by Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines.

Following the incident, the return flight UA1722 was called off and aircraft remained on ground for roughly eight hours before operating ferry flight to SFO.

There is steep rise in turbulence events across the world and also there is peak rise on the impact and severity of it.

In May 21, Severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines (SQ) flight from London Heathrow (LHR) resulted in one fatality and several injuries. The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok (BKK), landing at 15:45 local time (08:45 GMT).

Within a week, on June 26, Twelve people were injured when a Qatar Airways (QR) flight from Doha (DOH) to  Dublin (DUB) encountered turbulence. The flight landed in Dublin shortly before 1 PM local time and was met by emergency services, including airport police and the fire and rescue department.

Later on May 27, 2024, Turkish Airlines (TK) flight from Istanbul (IST) to İzmir (ADB) experienced severe turbulence, leading to significant injury for a cabin crew member. The Airbus A321 encountered turbulence shortly after the pilot issued a warning to fasten seat belts due to a sudden loss of altitude.
