SHANNON- On May 19, 2024, United Airlines (UA) flight from Zurich (ZRH) to Chicago (ORD) operated by Boeing 767 was forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon (SNN), Ireland after a business class passenger laptop stuck in a seat.

During the incident, the flight was over the Atlantic Ocean, and the flight crew was forced to make a diversion to Ireland and land without getting sufficient time to burn extra fuel.

United Emergency Landing in Ireland

According to FlightRadar24, United Airlines flight UA12 operated by Boeing 767-300ER (N663UA) took off from Zurich at 8:08 AM UTC. After being airborne for around 3 hours, the passenger laptop stuck.

At around 12:43 PM UTC, the flight landed safely at Shannon Airport. Now question arises what risk could a stuck laptop pose to flight?

It may sound silly at first but it isn’t. See the passenger and flight crew tried to remove the laptop but they failed. The laptop has lithium-ion batteries, which can catch fire if it gets damaged or this can affect the safety of passengers and crew onboard.

There were around 157 passengers and 10 crew members onboard the UA12 flight.

After safely landing in Shannon, engineers were reportedly able to retrieve the laptop. However, by that time, the pilots and flight attendants had reached their maximum allowable duty hours and were unable to legally continue the flight to Chicago.

Flight data indicates that N663UA is scheduled to operate as UA3030, departing from Shannon (SNN) at 13:30 and arriving in Chicago (ORD) at 15:25 local time.
