Viva Aerobus Inaugurates New Flights to Miami and San Francisco

MONTERREY- Miami International Airport (MIA) welcomed Mexican low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus (VB) on July 1, marking the airline’s inaugural flight with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony and traditional mariachi performance.

The launch expands travel options between South Florida and Mexico, strengthening ties between the two regions.

Viva Aerobus Miami Flights

Viva Aerobus now operates three weekly flights from MIA to Monterrey every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The airline also introduced twice-weekly service to Merida from July 2, with flights scheduled for Tuesdays and Saturdays.

These routes utilize Viva Aerobus’ modern Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, offering 186 and 240 seats respectively.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava enthusiastically endorsed the new service, stating, “I proudly welcome Viva Aerobus and its five weekly flights to Miami-Dade County, which will provide our residents and visitors with another convenient travel option to Mexico.”

She emphasized the longstanding importance of the Mexico-Miami travel market, noting, “For decades, Mexico has ranked among MIA’s three busiest international travel markets, and I am excited to see Viva Aerobus meet that strong demand with its new service to Monterrey and Merida.”

Mexico was MIA’s third-largest international market in 2023, contributing nearly 1.6 million passengers to the airport.

Viva Aerobus will join American Airlines (AA) in providing weekly flights from MIA to Monterrey and Merida.

Executive Remarks

“This highlights the importance of expanding the Florida-Mexico Tourism alliance. We are proud to promote responsible vacation destinations and support thousands in the tourism and hospitality sectors to meet industry demands. Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo Leon, is considered Mexico’s industrial and business hub and an important educational center. It hosts prominent business groups, renowned universities, and over 4,100 foreign companies. Monterrey is ranked 13th regionally and 122nd globally in Quality of Life,” said Eliel Campuzano Mendiola, Acting Consul General for Mexico in Miami.

Viva Aerobus becomes the fourth airline to launch passenger service at MIA this year, joining Condor Airlines, LEVEL, and Avelo Airlines.

Based in Monterrey, Viva Aerobus started operations in 2006 and plans to operate 190 daily flights in 2024.

Flights to San Francisco Bay Area

The San Francisco Bay Area now has a new connection to the Mexican state of Nuevo León, as Viva Aerobus begins flights between San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) and Monterrey.

These flights operate on Mondays and Fridays, ideal for tech workers commuting between the regions, with the following schedule:

  • Depart Monterrey International Airport (MTY) – 9:35 AM
  • Arrive San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) – 12:25 PM
  • Depart San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) – 1:55 PM
  • Arrive Monterrey International Airport (MTY) – 6:45 PM

“Viva Aerobus is a win for OAK, reflecting many years of effort and planning. This flight will foster closer ties and economic development between the San Francisco Bay Area, especially the East Bay, and Nuevo León,” said Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland.
