Why Lufthansa 747 Experienced Harsh and Bouncy Touchdown and Go Around in Los Angeles?

LOS ANGELES- A Boeing 747 operated by Lufthansa Airlines (LH) experienced a couple of rough moments as it landed at LAX Airport in Los Angeles.

Video footage of the landing, captured by Airlines Videos Live, shows the aircraft skidding on the runway and bouncing off the ground as it attempts to land. The plane then takes off again, flying for a few minutes before landing successfully.

Lufthansa 747 Harsh Go Around

“What? Whoa, whoa, whoa,” the commentator of the livestream could be heard saying. “We’re getting that go-around. Holy moly. Wow. That is the roughest landing I think we’ve ever caught on our broadcast.”

According to LAX’s website, a Boeing 747-8 Lufthansa flight was scheduled to land around 1 p.m. ET at LAX after a more than 11-hour flight from Frankfurt, Germany.

Why Pilot Performed Go-Around?

Khalid Alamer, the Aerodrome Operations Officer at RAC Aerospace Engineer, shaded light and explained why the Lufthansa Pilot performed a Go-Around after a harsh landing attempt.

Following the recent incident where Lufthansa’s 747-8 aborted its landing after a rough touchdown (touch-and-go), examining the potential reasons behind this decision is essential

While a rough landing can be unsettling for passengers and crew alike, aborting the landing indicates a deeper concern for safety.

One plausible explanation could be that the harsh touchdown exceeded predetermined safety thresholds set by the airline. Modern aircraft have sensors and systems that monitor various parameters during landing, including vertical speed, pitch, and touchdown forces. If any of these parameters exceed safe limits, it triggers an alert for the flight crew to take action.

Another factor to consider is the runway’s condition when landing. Adverse weather conditions such as strong crosswinds, gusty winds, or slippery runways due to rain or snow can make landings challenging. In such cases, pilots may decide to abort the landing to avoid risking the aircraft’s and its occupants’ safety.

Another factor to consider is inaccurate weight and balance calculations, affecting the aircraft’s stability during descent.

It’s important to note that deciding to abort a landing is not taken lightly and involves careful consideration of various factors. Ultimately, the primary concern of the flight crew is the safety and well-being of everyone on board. By analyzing incidents like these, the aviation industry can continue to improve safety protocols and procedures to ensure safe and efficient operations in the skies.
