After Bonza, Air Vanuatu Suspends All Its Flights to Australia and New Zealand

PORT VILA- Air Vanuatu (NF) has canceled its flights to and from Sydney (SYD), Brisbane, and Auckland (AKL) until at least Saturday. This decision coincides with reports indicating the appointment of an administrator.

Brisbane Airport (BNE) has acknowledged the flight cancellations for Thursday and Friday, advising passengers with bookings on Air Vanuatu not to proceed to the airport.

Air Vanuatu Cancel Flights

According to the Vanuatu Daily Post, the Air Vanuatu board has been dissolved, and an administrator was appointed on May 6. The publication noted that this development followed a former minister of infrastructure and public utilities warning last month about Air Vanuatu facing “a serious situation of bankruptcy.”

The airline’s official website lists canceled services on its “flight schedule changes” page.

“Due to extended maintenance requirements on our aircraft, the following services listed below are impacted,” it states. “We are collaborating with our partner carriers to minimize disruption to our guests.”

The Vanuatu Tourism Office issued a statement acknowledging reports of its national carrier entering voluntary administration, describing it as an “evolving situation.”

“At this point, we cannot provide further information but are in communication with Air Vanuatu and the Vanuatu government and will share updates as they become available,” a spokesperson mentioned.

“We are aware of the impact this situation has on travelers, ticket holders, and the industry, and on behalf of the Vanuatu tourism industry, we apologize to anyone affected.”

Bonza Downfall

This development follows closely on the heels of the collapse of Australian airline Bonza (AB) within 18 months of its inaugural flights.

A court session on Tuesday revealed that nearly 60,000 Bonza customers are facing financial losses due to the collapse.

According to barrister James Hutton SC, representing the administrators, the company had amassed over 60,000 creditors, encompassing 323 employees awaiting owed wages and annual leave and 120 trade creditors.

Additionally, around 58,000 customers with bookings were affected by the company’s demise.
