DOHA- Qatar Airways (QR) expands its North American presence by announcing a new flight service to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Canada on December 11, 2024.
The airline will operate three weekly non-stop flights from Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha, Qatar.
Qatar Airways Toronto Flights
Toronto becomes Qatar Airways’ fourteenth gateway to the Americas and second destination in Canada. The airline’s existing Montreal route has served over 1.6 million passengers since its inception, offering seven daily flights to and from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL).
The Toronto service will utilize Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, featuring 42 Qsuite Business Class seats and 312 Economy Class seats. This new route will connect Canadian travelers to Qatar Airways’ extensive global network, including popular destinations such as Colombo (CMB), Bangkok (BKK), Delhi (DEL), Kathmandu (KTM), and Mumbai (BOM).
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasized the airline’s commitment to enhancing connectivity for Canadian customers. He highlighted the introduction of Qatar Airways’ world-leading service and Qsuite in-flight product to the Toronto market.
Al-Meer further stated that the addition of Toronto as the fourteenth gateway in the Americas network reinforces Qatar Airways’ aim to maintain a strong presence in the local market and solidifies its reputation as a reliable global connector.
Strengthening Ties with Canada
Qatar Airways, named the World’s Best Airline by Skytrax in 2024, has significantly contributed to Canada’s international relations and crisis management efforts.
The airline provided crucial diplomatic support on various challenging issues and established an air bridge during the COVID-19 pandemic to repatriate thousands of Canadians.
The carrier currently serves over 170 global destinations through its hub at Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha. Qatar Airways continues to expand its network, aiming to offer passengers worldwide the most luxurious travel experience available.
The new Toronto service will operate thrice weekly, with flights scheduled on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flight QR767 will depart Doha at 09:50 local time, arriving in Toronto at 15:55 local time.
The return flight, QR768, will leave Toronto at 20:00 local time, reaching Doha at 16:30 local time the following day.
Qatar Airways new 6,772-mile route to Toronto have a flight time of 14 hours 5 minutes westbound and 12 hours 30 minutes eastbound.
Extension of Bilateral Agreement
This addition makes Qatar Airways the last of the “big three” Gulf carriers to serve Toronto, joining Emirates (EK) which serves from Dubai (DXB) and Etihad (EY) via Abu Dhabi (AUH).
The airline’s absence from Toronto until now stems from Canada’s historically protectionist aviation policies. A bilateral agreement between Canada and Qatar previously limited Qatar Airways to seven weekly flights to Canada, which the airline allocated to Montreal.
Recent developments suggest an expansion of this bilateral agreement, enabling the new Toronto route.
While official announcements about the expanded agreement are not readily available, a recent meeting between Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau focused on strengthening ties between the two nations.
