Best Summer Travel Destinations for US Passengers

This summer is poised to be exceptionally busy for US air travel, with a total of 721,651,961 seats currently in the schedule. Of these, 623,853,291 are allocated for domestic travel and 97,798,670 for international travel.

Curious about the top destinations for US travelers in summer 2024? OAG examined the USA’s top 10 city pairs for both domestic and international flights.

Best Int’l Summer Destinations for US Travelers

London will be the most visited city by US international travelers this summer. The London-NYC route leads with 1,794,067 seats scheduled, making it the only city pair on the international list to surpass 1 million seats (figures are for one-way travel). The LA-London route, in fourth place, has 733,605 scheduled seats.

Four out of the top ten international city pairs are routes between NYC and Western Europe. Besides the two mentioned above, Paris-NYC is second with 961,416 seats, and NYC-Rome ranks ninth with 596,724 seats. This year will see a record 140,000 scheduled flights between North America and Western Europe, up 6% from last year, which was also a record-breaking season.

Closer destinations in Canada and Latin America feature prominently:

  • NYC-Toronto takes third place with 880,171 scheduled seats this summer.
  • Orlando-San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital, has 674,745 scheduled seats, placing it fifth.
  • New York-San Juan ranks seventh with 637,512 seats.
  • NYC-Santiago, Chile, rounds out the list in tenth place with 523,706 seats.

Best Domestic Summer Destinations

This summer, the busiest domestic air travel route in the US is Chicago-New York, with 4,011,020 seats scheduled. New York prominently features in the top six domestic city pairs, connecting with:

  • Chicago: 4,011,020 seats
  • Atlanta: 3,577,556 seats
  • Los Angeles: 3,335,658 seats
  • Orlando: 3,115,331 seats
  • Miami: 2,936,371 seats
  • Fort Lauderdale: 2,661,581 seats

Other notable routes include Dallas Fort Worth-NYC with 2,459,250 seats and Charlotte-NYC with 2,363,696 seats, taking the 9th and 10th positions respectively. Additionally, Dallas Fort Worth-LA (2,566,731 seats) and Las Vegas-LA (2,499,520 seats) fill the 7th and 8th positions on the list.
