Cathay Pacific Flight Diverted to Japan

The flight, originally scheduled to depart Hong Kong at 4:15 PM local time on October 5th, experienced a delay and took off at 5:31 PM.

It was expected to reach New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport at 9:04 PM local time on October 6th. However, while flying over Sapporo, the aircraft altered course and touched down at Haneda Airport at 1:40 AM on October 6th.

Cathay Pacific confirmed the emergency landing, stating that flight CX840 diverted to Tokyo Haneda to offload an ill passenger. The aircraft landed safely at 01:44 local time, and airport staff promptly attended to the passenger before transferring them to a hospital for further medical care.

Due to Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department’s statutory crew operation and rest hour regulations, the flight will remain overnight at Haneda. Cathay Pacific has arranged hotel accommodations for the other passengers. The airline expects CX840 to depart from Tokyo Haneda at 21:20 local time.

This incident follows a previous issue with the same Airbus A350 model on July 15th, when a lavatory folding door malfunction caused operational difficulties. Cathay Pacific has since resolved that issue.

The airline emphasized its commitment to passenger and crew safety in all decisions. Cathay Pacific apologized for the inconvenience caused and expressed gratitude for the understanding of those affected by the emergency landing and subsequent delay.
