Qatar Airways to Order Mix of 200 New Airbus A350s and Boeing 777Xs

DOHA- Qatar Airways (QR) is close to finalizing a noteworthy widebody order, which will be split between Airbus and Boeing, according to Bloomberg News, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The Middle Eastern airline is considering an order for about 200 jets, including a mix of Airbus A350s and Boeing 777X models. A decision is expected as early as the Farnborough Air Show 2024 in Britain next month, the report indicated.

Qatar Airways New Order

Airbus stated that it continuously discusses fleet needs with customers but did not provide further details, while Boeing referred queries to Qatar Airways.

In March, Bloomberg reported that Qatar Airways was in preliminary talks with Boeing and Airbus to order 100 to 150 widebody jets to expand and renew its fleet.

Major airlines are currently competing to secure new, fuel-efficient widebody jets to reduce operating costs and meet the rising demand for international travel.

The proposal for the new aircraft order emerges following a significant legal dispute between  Qatar Airways and Airbus concerning safety issues arising from paint degradation.

Additionally, it coincides with an ongoing crisis of confidence at Boeing following the Max 9 door blowout incident in January, which raised concerns regarding safety, quality controls, and production and delivery delays.

“We are impacted when our aircraft are not delivered on schedule,” stated Al Meer.

“I understand that Airbus and Boeing are facing certain challenges. However, we have complete confidence in both companies, and we believe they are resilient enough to overcome these challenges.”

Al Meer mentioned that he anticipates receiving Qatar’s latest Boeing 777X order by the conclusion of next year, expressing his unwavering confidence in Boeing’s ability to produce safe aircraft, stating he is “110% confident” in Boeing’s commitment to safety.
