Ryanair Boarding Pass

Michael O’Leary, Ryanair Group CEO, unveiled this significant change during a recent press conference. The new policy will require all passengers to check in exclusively through Ryanair’s website or mobile app.

While passengers will still be able to check bags at the airport, the traditional check-in process will become obsolete.

This move builds upon Ryanair’s existing policy, which already encourages online check-in. Currently, only Flexi Plus ticket holders can check in at the airport without incurring additional fees. Other passengers face steep charges for airport check-in (£/€55 per person per sector) and boarding pass reissue (£/€20).

O’Leary acknowledged his personal adjustment to the new system, stating, “I’m one of the last remaining people still showing up with my piece of paper.” He emphasized the widespread adoption of Ryanair’s app and mobile boarding passes among passengers.

The CEO highlighted the benefits of this digital transition, including the elimination of airport check-in fees and a smoother travel experience for customers. “Once we get everybody onto the app, nobody will ever again pay for a boarding pass at an airport,” O’Leary explained.

Ryanair’s decision comes amid strong passenger growth, with 19.1 million travelers flying with the airline last month, marking a 10% increase from September 2023.

Minimal Pushback

Ryanair’s latest move to eliminate airport check-in and paper boarding passes marks an unprecedented shift in airline operations. This decision aligns with Ryanair’s reputation for implementing stringent policies, often perceived as punitive by customers.

The impact of this change will likely be minimal for most Ryanair passengers, as the majority already utilize online check-in. However, concerns arise for those without access to or familiarity with smartphones or computers.

Ryanair’s 60-day pre-flight check-in window offers some flexibility, but challenges may persist for certain demographics.

This trend towards digital-only processes is gaining momentum in the airline industry. Alaska Airlines (AS) 2023 decision to remove airport check-in kiosks exemplifies this shift.

Alaska Airlines reported 70% of passengers checking in online, aiming to increase this to 90%. Ryanair’s figures are likely higher due to existing financial penalties for airport check-in.

While Ryanair’s decision raises questions about accessibility and customer service, industry experts anticipate limited pushback. The cost-saving rationale behind this move remains unclear, as airport desks will still be necessary for baggage check-in.

A potential issue arises for passengers whose phones lose power before boarding. This scenario could create complications under the new system.
